I am a U.S. citizen and in the professional services industry. I married my wife who is Mexican in Dec 2024. We filed the I485 paperwork with a change of status along with the other usual forms. On a high level, after you meet with the lead attorney, the staff handles all of the paperwork and submits it for processing. It is supposed to be reviewed by another attorney, but I can't confirm that this happened as there were multiple mistakes along the way. There also seemed to be a lot of staff turnover and most things took two weeks or more for them to do. Here is my timeline. Package for all of the documents was $5K. We filed the I485 and other documents in February of 2025. You sign the paperwork via electronic signatures. I opted to file this paperwork with the USCIS credit card form. The staff never filled out the credit card data even through they had me send them a copy of my credit card. Two weeks later I received the entire packet back from USCIS due to lack of payment. I brought them a money order the same day I received the packet. It took them almost 10 business days to resend the paperwork although everything was already there from the initial submission. Two weeks later I get a request for additional information. My wife's birth certificate from Mexico was never translated from spanish to english which is part of the requirements when submitting documents in another language. Huge miss on their part and that should have been done initally. USCIS also wanted additional details and proof of my income. I'm in finance, so I pulled all of this data together as the forms instructed. I also paid to have my wife's birth certificate translated bc you need an official certified translated copy which you can get online. I was going to mail this in myself, but when I called the law firm, the staff insisted that I send it to them first which I did. After two days, I went ahead and sent off the documents myself. The attorney office ended up sending the documents about two weeks later with a letter from one of the attorneys. I received a bill for $750 from the law firm. Check the fine print of your contract bc it is in there as additional fees. A few weeks later, we received notice of our immigration interview. They wanted $3,000 to have a meeting to discuss the interview and for the lead attorney to appear with us. I opted to go with another attorney through Hope Immigration who I had spoken to about 1-2 years ago with some questions. They only wanted $750 to review all of the documents that were submitted, setup a mock interview and for the attorney to appear with us which I gladly paid. We were approved at that interview/same day. The green card was mailed out on September 2nd. When we hadn't received it by September 17th, I was worried that it may have been lost so I contacted USCIS to report that we didn't receive it. The attorney called us on 9/22 to inform us that they had out green card and to schedule a time to come pick up. I just received an email from USCIS with tracking instructions showing that the green card was delivered to the attorney's office on 9/5. So it took 17 days for the attorney's office to inform us that they had the green card in their possession. Then we had to schedule an appointment to come pick it up and speak with a specialist. We showed up to the appointment on time and the specialist wasn't even there. They brought in someone from another department. They also didn't tell us anything about next steps. The attorney that we hired for the interview emailed us after words to confirm that we were improved and notify that her green card is a temporary card until we have been married for two years and then we can file to remove the restriction. She also let us know that we will need to file new forms around the 5 year from marriage mark for her to get her US citizenship. None of this was mentioned from this attorney's office.
