My case involved a very detailed review which would have taken many accountants a substantial amount of time to do; however, Dr. Hanlon was incredibly responsive and knowledgeable about how to address a variety of tax and accounting nuances.

Unfortunately, my experience with this firm was disappointing. Despite contacting them nearly two months before the April deadline, uploading most documents well in advance, and paying the invoice immediately, we only received initial questions about the filing three days before April 15. The process felt rushed, but we trusted the firm and proceeded. Later, we discovered a critical error: despite providing exact U.S. stay dates, we were incorrectly categorized as nonresident because the substantial presence test was misinterpreted (we spent 207 days in the U.S., exceeding the IRS 183-day threshold). This basic requirement was missed, causing cascading issues since nonresident filings follow different rules. We consulted another professional who had to redo the return from scratch, incurring additional costs. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Firm acknowledged our previous return could be improved and amended—confirming the rushed initial approach. Even then, they missed key requirements, such as including worldwide income for residents, which we had provided from the start. We ultimately completed the process with another professional due to loss of trust. When we requested clarification and a refund, the firm initially promised to investigate but never followed up. Four months later, I am compelled to write this review. I believe the firm is highly professional overall and any interface has been extremely polite, but in our case, the process was not managed properly.

I reached out to Dr. Joseph Hanlon, CPA, to address an urgent and complex tax matter that was left unresolved by another CPA. He responded the same day with a phone review of the matter, and the next day scheduled a detailed in-person meeting with document review, including a call to the IRS to obtain the relevant information. He is truly an expert, very reliable, and has a solid work ethic. He demonstrates a strong commitment to resolving any concerns, whether early morning or late evening. He is very responsive and moves quickly to take the necessary steps required to address the matter. In my case, it took him only a couple of days to solve the problem. In addition, he makes the extra effort to explain the process and the rationale for the steps required to address the problem. I find him trustworthy and appreciate his work ethic, his honesty, and his ability to solve complex tax issues.

I feel compelled to write this review anonymously, and the very fact that I feel the need to do so says a lot about how uneasy and disappointed we were with this company’s conduct. It took us a while to write this review, The fear of potential retaliation or attempts to discredit an honest review speaks volumes about the standards we felt were present — or lacking — during our experience. Joseph often highlighted his years of experience and reputation in the field, but unfortunately, that didn’t reflect in how we were treated. Communication was far from transparent, and we often felt disrespected, dismissed, and talked down to throughout the process. Our concerns were not handled with the care or professionalism we expected. While the firm may have a reputation they proudly promote, our personal experience was far from what we would consider acceptable or professional. I hope this is taken as constructive feedback — clients should never feel afraid to share their genuine experience.
